The voting has begun in Comilla City Corporation election with the mayoral candidates of both Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The polls started at 8am and it will continue till 4pm without any break on Thursday.
The two leading mayoral candidates are Anjum Sultana Sima, who was nominated by the ruling Awami League, and Monirul Hoque Sakku, picked by BNP.
Both of the candidates are confident of victory. Apart from the two candidates, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) leader Shirin Akter and Major (Retd) Mamunur Rashid (Independent) are vying for the city mayor post.
A total of 114 candidates are there in the race for 27 general councillor posts, while 41 women are contesting the election for nine reserved seats.
The maiden election to Comilla City Corporation was held in a non-partisan manner on January 5, 2012 when BNP-backed Monirul Hoque Sakku was elected the first city mayor defeating Awami League-supported mayoral candidate Sima`s father Afzal Khan with a big margin.
