Netrokona’s rivers are slowly dying

At least 57 rivers have seen water crisis in Netrokona. Many rives have lost navigability, meaning they have already died. Sand char raised in every river due to a lack of river dredging.

Water flow have already reduced in rives such as Someshwari, Kongsho, Dhonu in the district. The irrigation process has been obstructed because of water crisis.

In 1897, a magnitude earthquake jolted in Netrokona, caused many big rivers – Joloch, Jhinai and kanai- lost their motion.

Every river of the district has filled up with sediment. Those rivers look like a playing field. Local people have passed over rives from one place to another.

The river “Mogra” flows into several parts of Netrokona, but the river has lost its navigability. Water flow reduced. Many people of those areas are facing problems- cultivation of paddy has seen obstructed.

Netrokona’s civil society alarmed that if this situation continues, the river will lose its existence as people won’t get advantages of the river in future.

Recently, a meeting was held at Deputy Commissioner (DC) office organized by District’s River Commission to take immediate action to oust illegal settlements on the bank of the rivers.

Meanwhile, DC office has already sent a missive to the occupiers in this regard.

Talking to Jago News, Alauddin, a member of local river commission, said that concerned authorities have taken an initiative to determine the original motion of rivers.

Md. Abu Taher, executive engineer of Netrokona Water Development Board, said that a proposal has sent under ‘Khabita’ project for dredging 12 rivers including several small canals in the district.

The dredging will start after getting approval, he assured.
