Taxpayers exceed 1.45 million

The number of individual taxpayers of the country crossed 1.45 million. Till January of this year, the total individual taxpayer number stood at 14, 54,079, finance minister AMA Muhith said while replying to a question made by lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari of Feni-2 constituency at the question answer tabled in the House on Sunday. The government launched 12-digit electronic tax identification number (e-TIN) from July 1, 2013 instead of previous 10-digit tax identification number (TIN) under e-TIN registration and database cleansing programme run by the National Board of Revenue (NBR), said the minister, reports BSS. The new electronic TIN identification number would help increase the number of individual tax payers. About the number of district-wise taxpayers, the finance minister said the number of district level taxpayers is being colleted in circle offices of the specific district in the country. Meanwhile, the finance minister said despite the political volatility prevailing in the country, the export earnings reached to US$ 30.2 billion during the fiscal year (FY) 2013-2014 which was 12 per cent or $3.16 billion more than that of the previous FY. "Although the country had to face political turmoil during the first half in 2013-2014, but due to time befitting efforts undertaken by the government the export earnings reached to $30.2 billion from $27.04 billion during FY2012-2013," AMA Muhith said while replying to a question from lawmaker Didarul Alam of Chittagong-4 constituency at the question answer tabled in the Parliament on Sunday. Even the export earnings from July to January of the current FY have also reached to $17.8 billion which was 2.1 per cent more than that of the same period of the previous fiscal, the finance minister told the House. On the other hand, the export earnings of the FY 2013-2014 were three times more than that of the export earnings in the FY 2005-2006, said the minister. The export earnings increased as various efforts along with the intensive diplomatic moves were taken by the government, the minister added.
