After students, now teachers go on strike at RUET

The teachers of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) declared an indefinite strike demanding punishment for the students who confined them for around 24 hours starting from 2pm on Saturday. The decision was taken from an emergency meeting of RUET Teachers’ Association on Sunday. Teachers will not take any class and examination from today. A group of students staged a demonstration in front of the VC office confining Vice Chancellor, 15 teachers and deans of different faculties inside the office demanding to scrape the ‘33 Credit System’ from 2pm Saturday to 2pm Sunday.Earlier on January 28 this year, students of academic sessions 2014-15 and 2015-16 started boycotting their classes and examinations and staged sit-in in front of the RUET administrative building demanding the cancellation of the system.Following student demonstrations on Tuesday, the authorities termed students’ demands illogical and suspended academic activities, including classes and examinations, of the two academic sessions for an indefinite period and also asked the students to vacate the halls.According to RUET officials, the university introduced the 33 credit system from the academic session 2013-14, which barred a student to be enrolled in the next session if he or she failed to get 33 out of 40 credits and would have to retake the whole year again.
