Despite a century for the ages from Marcus Stoinis, Australia has lost the first one-day international against New Zealand in stunning circumstances.Stoinis finished not out on 146 off 117 as the Australians lost by six runs chasing 287 to win. He came in at 5-54 and almost single-handedly carried the side to the most remarkable of comebacks.Ultimately it was an effort in vain, with No.11 Josh Hazlewood run-out for a 26-minute diamond duck in 47th over, caught napping by a direct hit from Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson. The Australians were in a world of trouble when they were reduced to 6-67 inside the first 19 overs, before Stoinis and James Faulkner (25) set about a recovery mission. The pair added 81 for the seventh wicket to take Australia to 7-148 when Faulkner was bowled by Colin Munro in the 35th over.Pat Cummins (36 off 30) added 48 runs with Stoinis to keep Australia’s hopes alive before being stumped by Mitchell Santner.Santner then tempted Mitchell Starc (3) into an ill-advised slog to mid-wicket with the final delivery of his 10-over allotment, and the star fast-bowler perished.Starc’s dismissal left the tourists needing another 61 runs to win with only one wicket in hand. They came within seven runs, with Stoinis and Hazlewood adding 54 off just four overs. Hazlewood did not face a ball. The No.11 was run-out for a diamond duck, caught short of his crease at the non-striker’s end by a direct hit from Williamson at mid-on, having backed up too far.It is the first time Hazlewood has ever been dismissed in ODI cricket and it couldn’t have come at a worse time for Stoinis, who hit 11 sixes and nine fours in his stay.Earlier, debutant Sam Heazlett was caught behind for 4 off Lockie Ferguson, who also ended Glenn Maxwell’s (20) stint at the crease. His dismissal piled on the damage after Shaun Marsh (16) had been stumped two overs prior. The pair had put on 30 runs for the fourth wicket, following an early collapse which was capped off when Peter Handscomb (7) nicked off to Tim Southee. Both Aaron Finch (4) and Travis Head (5) fell in the fourth over against Trent Boult, with Finch caught sharply at square leg before Head skewed one to the deep third man.Source: News.com.au
