High Court upholds verdict for Osman

The High Court has upheld the lower court’s verdict for 12 years imprisonment for former Chief Conservator of Forests Osman Gani on Tuesday.The Court fined him Tk. 10 lakh, in default he is to serve one more year rigorous imprisonment.The High Court bench of Justice Ruhul Quddus and Justice Bhismo Dev Chakravorty passed the order after hearing appeal petition filed by the defendant.The Court also sentenced Gani’s wife to 3 years imprisonment and fined her Tk. 2 lakh, in default she is to suffer six more months in jail.Though Osman Gani, who is now in jail, filed an appeal petition against the verdict, his wife did not file appeal as she is on the run.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had filed the case on Jul 26, 2007, accusing the couple of amassing illegal wealth, concealing assets worth around Tk 43 million and information in wealth statement.
