New Zealand set 252-run target for Bangladesh

Bangladesh`s bowlers bounced back from the Christchurch mauling, giving themselves a fair chance to level the series. New Zealand`s 251 is the first time Bangladesh conceded less than 318 bowling first in the country.Only Neil Broom, having returned to the ODI side for the first time in more than six years, applied himself to any effect. Though his team was nine down when he was on 99, he was rewarded with the maiden ODI hundred with a quick single in the 48th over. He finished unbeaten on 109 off 106 balls with eight fours and three sixes. On a day bathed in sunshine, and on a pitch slower than normal for Nelson, the home side struggled to bat at their usual high tempo. Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza led the way with the ball, taking 3 for 49 while Shakib Al Hasan and Taskin Ahmed finished with two wickets each. Debutant Subashis Roy and part-time offspinner Mosaddek Hossain also contributed to the overall bowling effort.Mashrafe`s decision to put New Zealand in was mainly due to Nelson`s record as a good chasing ground. It was only upon taking the field that he realised there was some movement on offer - both in the air and off the surface. He pinned Martin Guptill`s pads twice in two balls in the opening over. The impact was outside off stump the first time, so his appeal, and review, were shot down, but the batsman was plumb the second time.Kane Williamson, who was dropped on 13 by Roy off his own bowling, fell to Taskin Ahmed for the second game in a row, surprised by a length ball that held up in the pitch. His attempted flick over midwicket became a leading edge that was caught at mid-on. Tom Latham, centurion from the first ODI, was trapped leg-before by Shakib in the 14th over, to leave New Zealand on 47 for 3.Broom and James Neesham resisted with a 51-run fourth wicket stand. However, just as New Zealand began to dominate, Neesham was stumped for 28, having struck three fours and a hooked six off Taskin. Colin Munro, another hero from Christchurch, lasted six balls before Mashrafe got one to scythe between his bat and pad and hit the top of off-stump.Through it all, Broom dropped anchor, waiting for someone to keep him company. Luke Ronchi took up the responsibility, helping add 64 runs for the sixth wicket. Broom moved to his second ODI fifty in the 33rd over, before Ronchi took over the bulk of the scoring in the partnership. He made a 38-ball 35 that contained four fours and a six over long-on.With the slog overs approaching, and considering Ronchi and Mitchell Santner popped catches in front of the wicket, Broom went looking for boundaries. He moved into the nineties with a vicious pull off Roy, then swept Mashrafe for six over long leg, got his century and remained not out.Bangladesh could have closed the innings out sooner. Debutant wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan dropped a tough chance off Broom in the penultimate over. Taskin fumbled a throw from the wicketkeeper and couldn`t run No. 11 Trent Boult out in the final over. Given the chance again off the last ball of the innings, Taskin made sure he didn`t make the same mistake.Source : ESPNcricinfo
