All eyes on NCC polls

From tea stall to television talk show, the topic of the discussion is now Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC).While some people express their satisfaction regarding preparation of Election Commission, some also express their fear of violence at the polling centers.Political observers say that this poll is particularly important as this is the last polling duties of the incumbent EC.Many think that the current EC will do all it can to hold a fair election to preserve its image in its last duties.It is a great chance for political parties like BNP and ruling Awami League to verify their popularity before the next general election.Many central leaders of the parties took part in electioneering of NCC polls, which prove how much important the election for the respective party.The rivalry between Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman and Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy has also drawn attention of people.Awami League nominated Ivy for mayoral candidate and asked all leaders and activists to work in favor of her.There is widespread speculation about the role of Shamim Osman, who was defeated to Ivy in previous city polls.BNP, which boycotted the previous election, will fight it out until the very end, the party’s BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Monday.Apart from police and Rab, BGB have been deployed in the city to bring law and order situation under control.A total of 5,600 members of law enforcing agencies will perform their duties there.There are 174 polling centres in 27 wards of the city corporation with 1304 polling booths.Election Commission identified 137 polling centres as risky and special security measures will be taken for the centres.The voting will continued from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Seven mayoral candidates, 156 general councilor candidates and 38 reserved councilor candidates are participating in the election.
