Bangladesh to achieve SDGs before 2030: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Sunday expressed his firm belief that Bangladesh would be able to achieve many targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) before 2030, saying the country is moving forward by overcoming all challenges.“The government is working tirelessly to achieve the SDGs . . . poverty alleviation should no more be a continuous process, rather it must be sustainable,” he said while addressing as the chief guest the inaugural session of the media training workshop at Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) auditorium in the city.Inter Press Service and UN Foundation jointly organised the workshop.Terming climate change as one the major problems, Muhith said the coastal people are facing many problems including flood, river bank erosions, cyclone and drought due to this natural phenomenon. “Bangladeshis bearing the burden of excessive carbon emissions caused by the industrialized nations, who are mainly responsible for global warming, a great challenge for the mother Earth,” he added.Despite having a little contribution to global carbon emission, Bangladesh is facing many problems due to adverse impact of global climate change, he said adding, “We do not get compensation from the industrialized nations and we are taking programmes from our own funds to tackle the climate change`s negative impact.”Among others, Economist Dr Qazi Kholoquzzaman Ahmad and Director General of Inter Press Service Farhana Haque Rahman were present on the occasion.Source: BSS
