Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad today said that there would not be any necessity of deployment of army in the forthcoming Narayanganj City Council elections. "I think the law and order situation in Narayanganj does not necessarily require deployment of armed forces," the CEC told reporters after attending a meeting with senior officials of the home ministry and different law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The meeting was held at the conference room of National Economic Council (NEC) in the capital. He, however, said that instead of army, police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) would be maintaining the law and order situation as they usually do. The CEC`s statement came against the backdrop of the call of BNP for deployment of army during the polls for the Narayanganj City Council. Awami League mayoral candidate Selina Hayat Ivy, however, told journalists that she would have no problem if the election is held peacefully with deployment of any law enforcement agencies. "I want a free, fair and peaceful election," she said.
