‘Ganatantro Mukti Dibas’ is being observed in the country on Tuesday marking the fall of autocratic ruler HM Ershad in 1990.On the eve of the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued a message urging all to work together to strengthen the foundation of democracy calling people as ‘sentinel of democracy’ in a statement coinciding with the anniversary of fall of autocracy in 1990.‘The 6th December is a significant day in the history of restoring democracy. On this day in 1990, the fall of the autocratic government took place,’ she said.The premier urged countrymen to join their hands to free the country entirely from poverty and hunger and build a happy and prosperous ‘Sonar Bangla’ to materialize Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s dream.In the last two decades after the 1990, she said, the ruling Awami League played a responsible role to protect democracy and the people’s rights to voting while the way of grabbing of power has also been stopped through the 15th Constitutional amendment.Referring to the anti-autocrat movement of 1990, she recalled the supreme sacrifice of many including Noor Hossain and Doctor Milon and others and paid tributes to their memories.Different political, social and cultural organizations have chalked out various programmes marking the day.General Ershad ousted Justice Sattar and assumed power in 1982 and continued his autocracy rule up to 1990.In 1990, he was forced to step down following a pro democracy mass-upheaval led by Awami League.Source: BSS
