1.50 lakh people die of cancer every year in Bangladesh

Speakers at a function on Sunday said 1.50 lakh people die of cancer every year in the country, while nearly two lakh people are attacked by the deadly disease annually.Quoting the World Health Organization (WHO), they also said there are about 12 lakh cancer patients in the country.The function was organized on the occasion of launching of JBFH Breast and Stomach Cancer Care Centre at Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital (JBFH) at Dhanmondi in the capital.Eminent cancer specialist Professor Dr AMM Shariful Alam inaugurated the centre, while Chairman of the hospital Prof Sardar A Nayeem presided over the function.Prof Dr Anisur Rahman, Prof Dr Md mizanur Rahman and Managing Director of JBFH Dr Jonaid Shafiq and CEO Dr RM Samiul Hasan spoke at the function, among others.The speakers said the WHO information says that how much the breakout of cancer is becoming terrible in Bangladesh.They said thousands of people go to different countries including Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and India abroad for treatment of cancer. As a result, they said, thousands of crores of Taka go abroad every year.The speakers, however, said a ‘coordinated medical treatment’ is possible in the country for cancer patients. For this, sincerity of the physicians and a coordinated initiative are needed.The function was informed that the JBFH Cancer Care Centre has been set up comprising best doctors and most modern equipment.A separate chemotherapy unit has been introduced for breast and stomach cancer in the centre.Source: BSS
