PM calls for upholding democracy

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday called upon all to work together for development and welfare to strengthen foundation of democracy."The 6th December is a significant day in the history of restoring democracy. On this day in 1990, the fall of the autocrat took place," she said in a message on the eve of Ganotantro Mukti Dibash.The Prime Minister facilitated the countrymen on the occasion, terming them sentinel of democracy. In the last two decades after the 1990, the Awami League played a responsible role to protect the people`s rights to voting and food, she said, adding that the way of grabbing of power has also been stopped through the 15th constitutional amendment."Bangladesh Awami League government is pledge-bound to uphold democracy, constitution, rule of law and human rights. We have stopped the culture of impunity," he said and referred to the trials of the killers of the Father of the Nation and four national leaders, war criminals and perpetrators of August 21 grenade attack.Sheikh Hasina recalled the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975 and said then unconstitutional and illegal government came to power and robbed the people of their voting rights.Referring to anti-autocrat movement of 1990, she recalled the supreme sacrifice of Noor Hossain, Babul, Fattah, Dr. Milon and others and paid tributes to their memories.
