Two-day golden jubilee celebration begins at CU

A two-day Golden Jubilee celebration of Chittagong University (CU), one of the pioneering public universities in the country, began on Friday through bringing out colourful rallies in the city.

 

Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury led the rally that started from CU Fine Arts Institute in city’s Badsha Meah Road this afternoon, reports BSS.

 

CU pro-VC Prof Shirin Akhter and Deans of different Faculties, Chairmen of different Departments and Provosts of different Halls of the university, among others, took part in the rally that concluded at Shirish Tola in city’s CRB area after parading different city streets.

 

Several thousands of alumni and present students of the university carrying colourful balloons, festoons and placards participated in the rally marking 50 years of its founding anniversary.

 

The first day’s programmes included “Welcome Night”, traditional “Chittagonian Mejban” and cultural function at GEC Convection Centre in the city tonight.

 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the second day’s programme through video conference on Saturday.

 

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury will attend the second day function as the chief guest while Prof Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman will deliver memorial speech on the occasion.

 

Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossian, Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur, Mayor of Chittagong City AJM Nasir Uddin, former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof Dr Abdul Mannan will attend the function as special guests.

 

The second day’s celebration will begin at CU central field through video conference of the prime minister. On this day, discussion, reception to the freedom fighters and cultural function will be organised.

 

CU sources said nearly 10 thousand alumni and more than 20 thousand existing students of the university registered to participate in the function.

 

Located in picturesque Fatehpur union of Hathazari Upazila of the district, nearly 22 kilometers from Chittagong city, the CU came into being on November 18 in 1966.
