The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has formally inaugurated the dredged up Mongla-Ghasiakhali river route on Thursday.The Premier launched the Channel through video conference from Gono Bhabon.After completing the dredging operations, at least 50 to 70 cargo vessels of 6 to 8 feet draft and 40 to 60 vessels of 10 to 14 feet draft can use the 31-km waterways bypassing the Sundarbans on daily basis.The channel will help to carry imported goods in large vessels from the sea to Mongla Port.Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman first introduced the Mongla-Ghasiakhali river route by excavating the channel in 1972-1974.
