Eleven persons were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment each in the sensational Fazlur Rahman Fanu killing case in Shingra Upazila of Natore district.Fanu, Chairman of Kalam Union Parishad under Shingra Upazila and Upazila Awami League leader was killed brutally by some of his rivals on the way to his UP office on January 18, 2014.Judge of Rajshahi Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Golam Ahmed Khalilur Rahman here today found the convicts guilty of the murder and pronounced the verdict in presence of nine of them.The convicts are: Faridul Islam Paltu, Abdul Karim, Moyen Uddin, Abu Taleb, Shamsul Islam (absconding), Raijul Hassan Ripon, Muhammad Ali, Md Nazim, Noyan Hossain, former chairman Ibrahim Khalil Fatik and Alamgir Hossain (absconding).The tribunal also fined them Taka 5,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more behind the bar.Besides, the court acquitted seven other accused of the case as the charge brought against them could not be proved beyond doubt. According to the prosecution story, in brief, the accused gang first opened fire on Fanu and subsequently chopped him in broad day light at Shahpara area while he was going to his office on a motorbike accompanied by his nephew Jahidul Islam. Local people rushed them to Natore Sadar Hospital where the attending doctors declared Fanu dead.Younger brother of the deceased Mainul Haque lodged a case with Shingra Police Station mentioning names of 18 persons in the complaint.After examining the recorded deposition of 22 prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences the tribunal handed down the aforesaid verdict.Special Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque Babu conducted the case on behalf of the state while Advocates Ankur Sen and Mijanur Rahman defended the accused.
